In the aerospace industry the configuration of an engine or aircraft goes through many stages of development. The initial definition of the product and subsequent product improvement needs to take place in a controlled environment. Every change needs to be documented, reviewed, and authorized.

With Engineering Change documents, the CMExpert™ Configuration Management module records the master parts list of the IPC (Illustrated Parts Catalogue), the bill of material, and the introduction of parts into the production or maintenance cycle by serial number and model. It uses an ATA structure for all parts listings.

Using assembly records, the actual configuration of engines or aircraft can be established, quality checked, and maintained. The so-called "As-Built" or "As-Maintained" configuration is recorded and updated throughout the life-cycle of the product.
